FAQ

What are the disadvantages of bentonite waterproofing

Bentonite, as a multifunctional mineral material, although has a wide range of applications, also has some obvious drawbacks. The following are the main drawbacks of bentonite:

  1. Poor solvent adaptability

Organic bentonite: Due to the different cationic organic compounds introduced during modification, its adaptability to solvents varies. Some organic bentonite may disrupt or interfere with hydrogen bonds in highly polar solvent environments, resulting in unsatisfactory anti settling effects of the system.

  1. Poor dispersibility

Bentonite is a powdery rheological additive that is prone to difficult dispersion during the addition process. Especially in small-scale laboratory experiments, due to temperature and dispersion conditions, it is difficult to achieve ideal dispersion effects, and the measured data often has significant errors.

  1. Coating performance issues

Glossiness decrease: When the amount of bentonite reaches a relatively high proportion of the total formula (such as 20%), the coating will lose its luster severely, affecting its appearance.

Poor surface quality: The coating surface is prone to drying up, cracking, and becoming brittle, which reduces the overall quality and service life of the coating.

Low whiteness: Bentonite has a relatively low whiteness, which may limit its application in certain fields with high color requirements.

Poor leveling performance: Bentonite has a negative impact on the leveling performance of coatings, which may result in uneven coating surfaces and affect the appearance and performance of the coating.

  1. Health and environmental hazards

Respiratory health risks: Bentonite particles can be suspended in the air and can reach the lungs upon inhalation, causing irritation. Long term inhalation may lead to serious health problems such as pulmonary fibrosis and cancer.

Skin irritation: Bentonite can irritate the skin, causing dryness, itching, and rash.
